Of all of the error codes, the Err 01 is probably one of the most common. It occurs when there is a faulty communication between your camera and lens. In this post we’ll explain exactly what you should and shouldn’t do when trying to resolve this error.
1. WHY IT HAPPENS
Today’s cameras and lenses are very sophisticated. They spend a lot of time talking back or forth, relaying power, and things like aperture setting, auto focus position, image stabilization data, and even the lens model. All of this is done through these little pins and contacts on the camera body and on your lens shown below.
If your camera and lens aren’t making solid contact on all of those pins, your camera will give you this error. Inspect both areas for damage. You may have a stuck pin on the body or you may have a damaged contact on your lens mount and you may need to consult an authorized repair center for help. Hopefully that isn’t the case, however!
2. USE A T-SHIRT TO CLEAN THE CONTACTS ON YOUR LENS
Luckily, the most common cause of this issue is actually your fault. Well, your oily skin’s fault. The naturally occurring oils on your skin can act as an insulator which can inhibit the electrical contact. The fix is pretty simple, however! A soft, dry, cloth is all you need. Gently wipe the gold areas on the back of your lens with a wiping motion.
3. DO NOT USE A PENCIL ERASER OR WD-40
You may have heard of folks who just use a pencil eraser, WD-40 or some other spray to scrub the contacts with, but this is a bad idea. We will actually discourage any of those methods. The reason comes down to the softness of the metal and the gold plating and the risk of doing permanent damage by scraping it away with an abrasive substance. Stick to a soft, dry cloth.
