5 Wedding Photography Kits For Every Photographer

Written by Mike Duval

Often we’re asked our suggestion on what the right gear is for a particular shooting situation. One of the most common of those is wedding photography. Here, we’ve assembled our favorite gear for casual shooters and working pros alike.

The Wedding Guest Kit

Wedding Gear Kits-1002.jpg

Are you going to a wedding as just a guest? Still want to take some nice pictures? These two kits are just for you. We kept it simple with small, lightweight bodies and single lens solutions. Swapping out specialized f/2.8s for an all around f/4 zoom that still gives you plenty of focal length to play with. With the crop factor and the lens reach you can capture the action while staying out of the fray. This kit is perfect for destination weddings where you have adventures to document. We've added a flash for low light photos at the reception or as a fill light on those bright sunny days.

 The Working Pro Kit

Wedding Gear Kits-1009.jpg

This is far and away the most popular setup of working wedding professionals. These kits feature full frame bodies with fantastic high ISO performance and plenty of resolution.

Both include the workhorse 24-70 f/2.8 and 70-200 f/2.8. We also include an ultra-wide zoom and a macro for capturing every detail. It's hard to go wrong with this setup because you've got every focal length covered from roughly 14mm all the way to 200mm. Add a second body to the mix, and you can have 24-200mm covered at a moments notice (and have a backup body)!

When it gets dark, you can let your creativity fly with two Speedlight flashes for dynamic off camera lighting. Add some optional light stands and a collapsible softbox and you'll have a portable mini studio.

 The Prime Artist Kit

Wedding Gear Kits-1007.jpg

This is a play on our Working Pro Kit but with the upgrade to prime lenses. These kits are for shooters who want the best possible image quality. These lenses are designed for experienced pros who are familiar with the focal lengths they need during different parts of the day. Shooting primes will slow you down, but, in a good way. You’ll spend more time thinking about each shot, and walking around as you compose each shot. Shoot these lenses at f/2.8 for incredible sharpness & detail or open them up to f/1.4 and embrace ambient only low light photography. You still get two speed light flashes to give you lots of lighting options.

The No Expense Spared KIT

Nikon-NoExpenseSpared Kit-1.jpgWhen only the best will do, you can’t go wrong with the Canon 1DX MKII or Nikon D5. With frame rates well above 10fps and deep image buffers, you won’t miss a moment you can’t recreate. Both feature incredibly fast & accurate auto focus systems paired with the best high ISO performance in the business. This kit focuses on prime lenses again, but it adds the super exotic 200 f/2.0, and some wide angle zooms for full coverage. The 200 f/2.0 is arguably the best lens made by both Canon & Nikon. They create images with unparalleled sharpness, bokeh, and depth. Need a bit more reach? Add the 1.4x extender and have a 280mm f/2.8 for getting in close during the ceremony.

We’ve also added in a Profoto B1 trigger, and 24x36 Softbox. The Profoto B1 and soft box setup will give you the power you need to work in just about any lighting scenario. Get beautiful, studio-quality lighting on location with no wires to trip over.

2017 Wedding Season Photo Gear To Try

Get Accessorized

Don't forget about the essentials like extra batteries and memory cards! For most cameras you can photograph an 8 hour wedding with 2 batteries. Having a 3rd is a good safety net. Cameras like the Canon 1DX Mark II and Nikon D5 can usually shoot for 8 hours on a single battery.

How much memory you'll need is mostly up to your shooting style. With most cameras supporting dual card capture, and RAW files in the 30-40 MB range we'd recommend either dual 64GB or 128GB memory cards.

Finally, when it comes to lighting, if you need stands for your lights, we have a great 2 stand kit that can be added on to any order.
